Spotlight on Actor Wassim Hawat.

Wassim Hawat is a talented actor with both experience on screen and stage. He has an impressive list of appearances on both television and film, having had roles on Home and Away, Gods of Egypt and The Killing Field to name a few. Wassim has also adorned the cape and tread the stage as Count Dracula in a dark musical comedy called Monster Big Ball. Wassim Hawat is definitely an actor on the move, and one to keep your eye on. We had the pleasure of interviewing Wassim.

Welcome to The Australian Short Film Network Wassim.

Wassim -Thank you very much for having me.

When it comes to acting you are experienced in both theatre, film and television. Which out of these if any do you prefer and why?

Wassim - To be honest, each of these has provided me with a different experience, exposure and of course joy.  Theatre acting can be traced back in the sixth century BC. For a couple of thousand years, theatre actors have needed to speak loudly and use dramatic body movements. The introduction of film and television was a major change for actors around the world. This is a challenge for modern actors as well, as many of them gained experience performing on stage. When they begin acting in television or movies, the tone, pace, movements, the entire performance needs adjusting & Vice versa.

What is your favourite Australian film?

Wassim - Animal Kingdom, Chopper, Wolf Creek, Mad Max, Strictly Ballroom, The Nightingale, Lantana, Rogue.

How has Covid 19 affected your career?

Wassim - Yes, auditions slowed down a lot, haven’t booked any work this year or since Covid 19 was official, most productions are on hold. In saying that, the time in isolation provided me the motivation to start creating my own work…so currently working on a short dark thriller character driven and developing my first feature film, which has always been a dream of mine.

What project are you currently working on?

Wassim -

  • Dark Short Film

  • Feature Film

  • Waiting on answers from a few film makers/productions regarding auditions

If you could work with any actor or director who would it be and why?

Wassim - I’d love to work with Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise, The Rock, Clint Eastwood, Liam Neeson, Meryl Streep, Joel Edgerton, Johnny Depp, Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, Brad Pitt, Leonardo Di Caprio, Nicole Kidman, Zack Snyder, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Chris Nolan, James Cameron, Ridley Scott, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, George Lucas, Ron Howard, Guillermo Del Toro, Denis Villeneuve, David Fincher, Michael Mann.

If you could be in the remake of any Australian film what would it be and why?

Wassim - To be honest I appreciate film-making a lot and the hard work and years of effort to putting a film together, so I wouldn’t touch or re-make any existing movie.

Do you have any advice for people starting out in acting?

Wassim - Good Luck ! Hahaha..its a very tough industry to crack so if your heart is not into it 1000000% I say don’t even think about it !

You like to keep fit, do you feel that this is essential for an acting career?

Wassim - 100%, also depends on the characters you play. I'm interested in playing tough heroes and villains in action movies, this of course requires you to be fit and healthy, for me personally that is not the main reason, I try stay fit and healthy to feel good about myself as a human.

What was the last movie you watched?

Wassim - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Loved it.

When did you decide that you wanted to pursue a career in acting?

Wassim - Later in my life late 20’s early thirties. Is when it hit me and I was old enough to know what I really wanted out of life.

Where can our readers find you?

Wassim -

Thank you for talking to us Wassim.

Wassim - Absolute Pleasure.
