The Art Hunter - An Eye Witness Account by David Black

This juicy chat show almost made my ears drop off and my eyeballs fall out!

The Art Hunter is a provocative show on Channel 31, where David Hunt interviews two highly talented people each episode. Over 50 shows have been produced to date featuring visual artists, dj’s, opera singers, movie directors, actors and more as guests. The show is a great outlet for supporting local artists and it's well into its’ fourth season on TV and going strong!

I was lucky enough to be invited, along with Grace Liu, to a live taping of the show at the Alex Theatre.

The Alex Theatre in St Kilda is also a great supporter of local arts. Tonight, their foyer was transformed into a film set that was an eclectic mix of plush red chairs and fancy couches that resembled an eccentric magnates lounge room. It was the perfect vibe for the show that was to come.

David Hunt is a fantastic interviewer. He has a rich, deep voice and a wicked sense of humour. He certainly manages to get stories out of his guests that will blow your mind. David comes with a wealth of experience as he has been the presenter on Joy FM’s Sunday Arts Magazine show for the last 6 years.

David has had some amazing guests because he is extremely well connected due to having been in senior management roles with huge record companies, such as BMG, EMI, Virgin and MDS for the last 30 years. On this night, his guests were Gavin Campbell and Gerard O’Connor.

Gavin is a legendary DJ from St Kilda who has been one of the most influential figures in the dance music and club scenes. His big claim to fame was re-mixing Yothu Yindi’s iconic song, “Treaty”, to make it a world-wide hit, and in return, highlighting the Aboriginal cause. Gavin was a dj at the infamous Razor club and had some saucy stories to tell. There is no way in hell I will be repeating them here so you will just have to watch the show to find out.

Gerard O'Connor - creator of amazing images. Pic by Grace Liu

Gerard O’Connor is brilliant photographer who has created some astonishing pieces. My jaw dropped as some of these images were splashed upon the screen. I had seen a few from the Victoriana Pleasure Garden shoot in the past, but until this moment, I hadn’t known who the photographer was. Gerard’s work is sometimes provocative and other times decadent. Sometimes it is classy, but never is it boring.

The Art Hunter is a show that I am sure my fellow creatives will enjoy watching. Grace and I certainly had a fantastic time watching the live taping. You can find out more about the show and all involved through the links below
